Ep. 1: Can Couples Create Together?

“Wait, so you and your spouse actually work together on projects?”

“How do you still like each other?”

“Doesn’t it cause fights?”

These questions were actually, in a lot of ways, the catalyst for the birth of The Creative Couples Podcast. In our first episode, we answer these questions and talk about how we’ve worked together successfully and sometimes not so successfully.

So can couples actually create together?

Absolutely, and we make the case for why we think it’s actually more beneficial for your relationship to co-create as opposed to avoiding it.

We’ll share 5 areas of advice that we've found helpful when creating together as a couple.

Be sure to listen to the episode for a more detailed explanation of each one of these and some stories to go with it.

5 Healthy Ways for Couples to Create Together

  1. Determine the desires of each person.

Awareness of individual motivations when starting a project can make or break its success.

  2. A healthy marriage comes first.

If there are other issues that still need work in your marriage, diving into any creative endeavor together could be disastrous.

  3. You need boundaries.

Marriage is already intimate. Sharing raw, created work is another level of intimacy, so finding ways to share ideas productively is crucial.

  4. Know the roles you each play.

There is no room for egos in this space, friends, so get ready to get real comfy with your own strengths and weaknesses and what you can and can’t bring to the table.

  5. Be kind.

There will be days of existential questioning, anxiety, and doubt - remember you and your spouse are on the same team!

How co-creating makes your marriage better

Learning to disagree productively, honoring and elevating each other's strengths, and building a deeper appreciation for your spouse are all possible outcomes of the unique collaboration of being married and doing creative work together.
